A Gathering Of Epic Proportions — An Evening with Eva Santos and the VIP Waiters

By: Chris Marcojos Posted: 5/21/06 The singular fundraising dinner and concert hosted by the Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) entitled “An Evening with Eva Santos and the VIP Waiters” held at the Metrocentre Hotel last Saturday, February 25, 2006, was a hit. Two hundred (200) curious Boholanos attended the affair to experience a first in Boholano history. Dismounting from their high horses and coming down from their ivory towers, Bohol’s top government leaders, business tycoons, civic leaders, and socialites served as waiters for the evening fundraiser, all in the spirit of goodwill and sportsmanship. The affair was the brainchild of the Officers and Trustees of BCCI headed by BCCI President Norris Oculam and Dinner for a Cause Committee Chairperson Wilfilda “Baby” Collins and committee members Pureza Chatto and Helena “Tata” Veloso. Conceptualized a few months ago, the project is intended to raise funds for the local business advocacy projects and investment promotions planned by BCCI in addition to promoting a closer and more effective relationship among the business community, the local government leaders, and the local civic leaders. However, in light of the recent Southern Leyte tragedy, BCCI will also be donating part of the evening’s proceeds to the victims and their families. Certainly no room for compettition here, Mr. Fred Ong of BQ and Mr. Marlito Uy of Alturas take a pose for the cameras. No special photo effect or camera trick in the above photo. BCCI aids Leyte mudslide victims

Posted: 5/21/06 DyRD’s Fred Araneta receiving the check donation from BCCI headed by Pres. Norris Oculam, Trustee Reginald Ong, Treasurer Baby Collins, Trustee Tata Veloso and VP-Internal Affairs Pureza Chatto. True to its mission to integrate in its activities, the social responsibilities towards the community, the Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (BCCI) responded with its heart to the immediate and urgent needs of the St. Bernard mudslide victims in Leyte province. The chamber as it always sets itself in the mainstream of community service, has dedicated several medical-dental missions in the past and recent years. This year, however, the chamber allotted the amount to extend aid for the urgent needs of the unfortunate Filipino brothers and sisters who succumbed in the devastation brought by the mudslide tragedy in St. Bernard, Southern Leyte. BCCI donated the amount of P20,000.00 to complete the funds raised by “Operation Tabang Para sa Leyte” of dyRD, dyZD and the Bohol Chronicle that raised P347,423 for the victims. The said amount was turned over to the Diocese of Maasin under Bishop Precioso Cantillas. Aside from the amount, two truckloads of used clothing boarded on MV Our Lady of Carmel, were also bundled for the victims. The provincial government has provided the dump trucks that brought the relief goods to Leyte province. The management of MV Our Lady of Carmel offered free freight services for the two dump trucks as arranged by PPA Ubay. On the part of the BCCI, the concerted effort and cooperative value of extending help to the unfortunate victims of any tragedies and disasters are the true life-blood of heartfelt...

E-service industry – Bohol’s entry to the new economy

By: Manuel Ferdinand de Erio BRAZING the opportunities brought about by recent technology, the Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (BCCI) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) are at the forefront of the province’s efforts to attract potential investors. The concerted efforts of the BCCI and DTI have consequently yielded a promising turn out for the economic development of the province with the several e-service companies who have shown serious interest in locating their operations in the province. Two multinational e-service companies, Polytron and Teletech have expressed their interest to put up call center operations in Tagbilaran City. The trend of development that rooted from the establishment of e-service businesses has proven to exceed the government’s projections. However, the companies have expressed the need for an upgrade of communication infrastructure by converting the present system into fiber-optics line. Responding to the concern, BCCI and the province have been vigorously lobbying to PLDT for the upgrading of such infrastructure. While the country relies heavily on labor export which provided almost a billion dollar a month to the economy, the social cost is high. With the e-service industry, the Philippines is only exporting services to the world while workers still reside in the country with their families. Significantly, the opportunity is a better alternative than sending degree holders to work as entertainers or domestic helpers...
